Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a “Teardrop” Camper?

Teardrop Campers were born back in the 20’s and 30’s with the rise of an invention called the Automobile.  They were home-built trailers made to allow a newly mobile few to travel for leisure. They were generally made of wood, and very basic.  However, some people incorporated the streamlined Art-Deco style of the times and their shape dubbed the name “Teardrop”.

Our soldiers returning from WWII in the 40’s and early 50’s saw a nation of new prosperity.  For the first time in our history, people truly had leisure time, and a little money in their pockets.  There was also a surplus of aluminum!  Teardrop campers were in their heyday and wartime manufacturers retooled their factories to produce these light campers for the public.  In addition, the new national Interstate Highway System gave everyone a fast way to see the wonders of our United States.  People traveled with their family car coast to coast seeing the sights of our great nation.

As vehicles became more powerful in the 60’s, the public demanded more and more from their campers.  As a result they became larger and larger and Teardrops were replaced by behemoth land yachts.  Now you needed a dedicated tow vehicle.  Campers for the first time became self propelled with massive engines.

However, a massive shift in camping came with the gas crisis of the 70’s.  In an effort to avoid the high cost of gasoline, there was a shift from an exploration style of travel, to a destination style. People traveled to just one place and then stayed.  Gone was the open road and that sense of adventure.

Yet there are still a few who enjoy the adventure today.  Teardrops today are gaining a resurgence!  New fuel efficient cars, combined with today’s modern Teardrop campers now allow you to once again enjoy the feel of freedom and the open road in modern comfort and classic style.

How heavy are they?  Can my car pull one?

Teardrop Campers are designed to be pulled by the family car.  They can weigh anywhere between 750lbs to 1500lbs (depending on style and options), which is usually within the range of most sedans, or mini-vans.

Is there a bathroom?

No.  Teardrops are designed to maximize efficiency and minimize maintenance, so they do not include bathrooms. This may seem like a drawback at first but consider this:

* Of all the things people dislike about the big campers, emptying the waste water tanks ranks #1.

* Toilets and the associated equipment takes up huge amounts of space and weight compared to the use they receive.

* Park and Campground facilities are cleaned and disinfected thoroughly at least once a day.  Is yours?

* Of all the things you want to take on your vacation, is “black water” one of them?

How much storage space is there?

There is enough for at least a week’s worth of clothes and food for two people in even the smallest Teardrop.  This also includes storage for jackets, boots, camp chairs, awnings, fishing/hiking equipment, and more.  We can customize your storage to fit the way you camp too.  If you bike or kayak, we got you covered!

How much do they cost?

Of course you can customize your camper to your needs, but you can get one ready to go for about $7,950.

What are they made of?

The chassis is steel, the cabin is wood or composite plastic, the the outer skin is aluminum.  All of it is recyclable/ renewable materials.  We work hard to be good stewards of our earth.  You can bet that your camper was once a soda can, a milk jug, and a ’79 Buick.

What MPG can I expect while towing?

It varies with depending on the vehicle, camper, and terrain.  Usually you can expect only a few miles per gallon drop under normal conditions.  We take special care to consult with you before your purchase to properly match a Teardrop to your towing vehicle to maximize efficiency and safety.

I see the exterior is aluminum.  Is it hard to take care of?

We use Anodized Aluminum because it is light, strong, and does not rust.  Designers in many fields use it for these wonderful properties.  Just a bath and rinse in mild soapy water usually is all that is needed to make it look sharp.   Because of the Anodization process, your aluminum will never tarnish and will always look like new with no polishing!
